Why am I Here?

Okay, so you just walked into a room and forgot what you went for. These 'senior moments' happen to most of us… and the good news is that they are not (in themselves) a sign of old age. The ease with which we forget simple things is related more to our attention, than to our age. You were probably distracted en route, or the item you wanted to remember wasn’t important enough to be registered completely in your mind.

You can help to solve the problem by increasing your awareness: visualize what you want or need before you start walking into a room. It is also useful to link items you need to remember to something that is already familiar to you. If you are going into the hall to get your mobile phone, think of yourself making a phone call – imagine the beginning of the conversation and rehearse what you will say. This helps to make the item more vivid and memorable. When you forget to visualize what you want and find yourself thinking, Why am I looking in the fridge? Simply retrace your steps; mentally re-creating the situation that caused you to go there in the first place will almost certainly help jog the brain cells back into life!
